The issue was ignored because it deserved to be. The petition these folks initially presented to the APS was an embarrassment for anybody who understands science. Trillions of dollars going to climate science (“literally” he says)!!!

This is just further long the road of ridiculous conspiracy theories that this country is burdened by that have undermined anything remotely like rational debate. Yes, the left has it’s conspiracies as well, but they have not penetrated nearly as far into supposedly respectable debate.

My guess is that most APS members are quietly saying ‘good riddance’ to any members who foisted this episode on the organization. What next? A petition to study the black helicopters? That NAZA didn’t really land on the moon?

There is one interesting aspect of the letter to me. He says that

This scheming at APS HQ is so bizarre that there cannot be a simple explanation for it.

There is a simple explanation. It’s all in his head, and apparently some other people on this blog as well. But it is bizarre.

I was one of the APS members initially contacted by Hal and a very distinguished set of cohorts. Could it be? Somebody taking issue with this anthropogenic climate garbage except (in private) me. After making sure the email was from him, we talked on the phone and I told him I would resign the APS if I could:
1. I still have personally significant life insurance with the APS and
2. My resignation would carry little weight.
Now, his letter in hand, I commend him, and can tell the non-physicist that his opinion does carry weight. Objectivity and disinterest only exist in science today in a few emeriti. Corruption in science funding is rampant and funding mechanisms need reorganization. A possibility is to shut down several taxpayer-funded federal money sinks but that will put a great many six-figure puppets out of work. Will that happen?

“You can’t take it with you” they say, so I guess we should stand for something in life. This really does seem to be a very good opportunity for the “worthwhile in science” (and academia) to take a stand. If only as a “Me Too!” with Hal Lewis. Too many have assumed the high principles of the world’s oldest profession and forgotten about, or never learned, those of the best. Integrity really counts, both now and in the hereafter (whatever that may be;-)

Landsea resigned because of an unethical press conference that was likely used by Al Gore as a green light to build his movie around Hurricane Katrina. Pielke resigned because while lead author for a major climate report, scientists worked behind his back to undermine him. These incidents are well known and not hard to research.
